Who plays where
Scottsdale Stadium, at 7408 E. Osborn Road, is the San Francisco Giants' spring home, right in Old Town. That's why the whole district turns orange and black. You can walk to dinner afterward, and that's the best thing about it.
Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, at 7555 N. Pima Road, is shared by the Diamondbacks and Rockies, so there's usually a game going during the season. It's on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land, which has its own marijuana code. Use isn't allowed in public spaces there either.
We don't list schedules, because they change every year. The teams post them, and tickets generally go on sale around January.
What it does to the city
Old Town gets the worst of it, or the best, depending on your mood. Afternoons fill up with jerseys and sunburns, and evening patios stay full. Weekends stack bachelorettes on top of baseball fans, and at that point it's a contact sport. Locals who don't want any of it stay up north or eat in South Scottsdale.
Traffic around Osborn and Scottsdale Road slows down near game time, and the same goes for Pima Road around Salt River Fields. If you're just trying to get across town, look at the schedule first. It's two minutes of planning that can save you a very long left turn.
Going to a game
Sesh at home, then go. Stadiums are private property with their own rules, and parking lots aren't a workaround. Then leave the car at home: if you live anywhere near Old Town, walk or rideshare. The city's free trolley runs on weekdays only, until 7:45 PM, so it won't help on a Saturday.
The March sun is stronger than it feels, especially on the lawn. Wear a hat, bring sunscreen, drink water, and pace yourself if you've had an edible. Being baked in the sun for three hours without shade is a rookie mistake, and it's not the good kind of rookie.
Eating around it
On game days, every kitchen near the stadium gets slammed at the same time. Eat before the crowd or go a little off the main blocks. Sugar Bowl, Los Olivos and The Mission are close to the stadium, and they're the classic choices. For less of a wait, head to the plazas in South Scottsdale. Our munchies guide has the rest, and the seasons guide shows what else the spring has going on.
